The dark skin of game developers is the least discussed topic among gamers, but it is a crucial one to avoid if you want to play a game with more than a couple of playable characters.
It can be a hindrance for both new and veteran players, and can make the player feel less connected to the world around them.
“I just don’t want to be in a situation where they can see the difference between me and someone who is black,” says Brandon Hynes, an indie game developer and self-proclaimed “game-centric white person.”
Hynes has created and published several games, including “Crimson,” a game where players are given a set of weapons and have to interact with each other in order to kill each other.
“It’s like you’re playing with a black person in the same room with a white person,” Hynes says.
“You’re playing a video game.
The only thing you’re seeing is black people.”
In the game, the black player is not even considered a playable character.
The developers wanted to address the issue of race in the game before releasing it, Hynes said.
“We’ve done it before, we just didn’t do it as much,” he said.
Hynes is not alone.
The dark-skinned people who play video games are frequently the ones who get attacked, harassed, and even killed.
A recent report by The New Yorker found that black people are killed at a higher rate than any other race by white people in the U.S. According to the National Coalition Against Police Brutality, “there are more black men in prison than women.
Black women are nine times more likely than white women to be killed by a police officer.”
Black people also experience higher rates of sexual assault in the United States than any group, according to the Violence Against Women Act.
While Hynes doesn’t believe that race is a barrier to playing video games, he does say that “dark skin is definitely a problem.”
“You have to be aware of it,” Hinesys says.
“[I think] we need to be careful.
I think we need some people who are in positions of power to have the same respect as everybody else.”
Hinesies is currently working on “Black Light,” a dark-skin-focused game that is due to release this fall.
The game has no racial elements.
But Hynes’ concern isn’t only with the game itself, but with the developers behind it.
“What about these people who feel like the developers should be more respectful?” he asks.
“The thing is, I don’t know that they are.
I don. And I don
